Genetic Engineer
Genetic Engineer: join a collaborative, safety‑minded team to design, test, and optimize genetic constructs; troubleshoot, document clearly, and drive compliant, scalable biology solutions.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused Genetic Engineer to design, develop, and optimize genetic constructs and workflows that support research and product development. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across molecular biology, process development, analytics, and quality to deliver robust genetic engineering solutions, troubleshoot experimental challenges, and ensure reproducible, compliant laboratory operations. This role requires strong hands‑on molecular biology skills, careful experimental design, clear communication across teams, and a commitment to biosafety and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Design, assemble, and validate genetic constructs (plasmids, viral vectors, CRISPR systems, genomic edits) using modern cloning, synthesis, and genome engineering techniques.
Plan and execute molecular and cellular biology experiments including transformation/transfection, selection, screening, and validation of engineered strains or cell lines.
Develop and optimize genetic workflows for expression, regulation, and pathway engineering to meet performance, stability, and scalability goals.
Implement and refine analytical assays (PCR/qPCR, sequencing, Sanger, NGS sample prep, flow cytometry, reporter assays) to characterize genetic modifications and phenotypic outcomes.
Perform data analysis, interpret results, and iterate on experimental design; maintain clear electronic lab records and versioned construct inventories.
Collaborate with process development, downstream analytics, and manufacturing teams to support transfer of engineered strains/cell lines to scale‑up activities and ensure construct stability under production conditions.
Maintain and enforce biosafety, biosecurity, and laboratory quality practices including adherence to institutional and regulatory guidelines, permit processes, and risk assessments.
Support reagent, plasmid, and cell line management: track inventories, coordinate with vendors for synthesis and sequencing services, and manage sample storage and accessioning.
Participate in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions for experimental failures or unexpected results; document lessons learned and update protocols.
Contribute to protocol development, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training materials; mentor junior staff and promote a collaborative, inclusive lab culture.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioengineering, or related life sciences discipline, or equivalent hands‑on laboratory experience.
3+ years of practical experience in molecular cloning, genome editing (CRISPR/Cas or equivalent), and cell line or microbial strain engineering in a research or industrial laboratory.
Strong hands‑on skills with PCR/qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, sequencing sample preparation, and routine aseptic technique.
Experience designing genetic constructs, using sequence analysis tools, and interpreting sequencing results for construct confirmation and variant analysis.
Proficiency with laboratory documentation practices, electronic lab notebooks (ELNs), and basic data analysis tools (Excel, Python/R scripting preferred but not required).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills: able to prepare clear experimental reports, present results to cross‑functional teams, and collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders.
Commitment to biosafety, regulatory compliance, and ethical research practices; experience working under biosafety level (BSL) guidelines appropriate to the work.
Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple experimental priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, or related field preferred for roles with greater experimental ownership.
Experience with next‑generation sequencing workflows, amplicon and whole‑genome analysis, and familiarity with common bioinformatics tools/pipelines.
Background in microbial metabolic engineering, mammalian cell line development, or viral vector engineering depending on project focus.
Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), version control for sequence data, and container/sample tracking systems.
Training or certifications in laboratory safety, GLP/GMP principles, or relevant regulatory frameworks advantageous for translational projects.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary R&D organization; primarily laboratory‑based with periodic cross‑site collaboration and meetings.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
