Environmental Engineer
Environmental Engineer: join a collaborative, safety-minded team to design and implement compliant environmental programs, protect people and the environment, and drive continuous improve
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused environmental engineer to support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental programs for laboratory, pilot‑plant, and light industrial facilities. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, process engineering, facilities, EHS, and construction teams to develop practical, code‑compliant solutions that minimize environmental risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and advance sustainability goals. This role requires sound technical judgment, clear cross‑team communication, hands‑on project delivery, and a commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
-
Develop, implement, and maintain environmental compliance programs including air emissions, wastewater, hazardous waste, stormwater, and chemical management to meet federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., EPA, state agencies).
-
Prepare and review environmental permits, registrations, and notifications (air permits, NPDES, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, hazardous waste manifests) and coordinate submissions with regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
-
Perform environmental assessments, permitting support, and impact analyses for new equipment, pilot plants, and facility modifications; develop mitigation measures and permit conditions to minimize environmental impacts.
-
Design and specify controls and treatment systems for process effluent, air emissions, and other environmental discharges; evaluate vendor technologies, review submittals, and support equipment installation and commissioning.
-
Conduct sampling, monitoring, and data analysis for air, water, soil, and waste streams; develop and maintain monitoring plans, chain‑of‑custody procedures, and documented results suitable for regulatory reporting.
-
Prepare technical reports, environmental workpapers, and regulatory filings; produce clear, well‑documented engineering calculations, mass balances, and fate‑and‑transport assessments as required for permitting and compliance.
-
Lead or support environmental due diligence, site investigations, and remediation planning; coordinate with environmental consultants and contractors to implement corrective actions and track progress.
-
Participate in process hazard analyses, risk assessments, and change control reviews to ensure environmental considerations are integrated into project scope and design decisions.
-
Support incident response, spill investigations, root cause analysis, and development of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA); update procedures, training, and controls to prevent recurrence.
-
Develop and deliver environmental training and awareness programs for operations, laboratory, and engineering personnel; promote best practices for chemical handling, waste minimization, and pollution prevention.
-
Contribute to the development and maintenance of environmental standards, specifications, and technical guidance; mentor junior staff and foster an inclusive, team‑oriented engineering culture.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering with environmental focus, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
-
3+ years of practical experience in environmental compliance, permitting, monitoring, or design in industrial, laboratory, or process environments; experience with hazardous materials and waste management preferred.
-
Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, state/local requirements) and experience preparing regulatory submittals and reports.
-
Experience with environmental monitoring and sampling protocols, data analysis, and interpretation; proficiency with Excel and data visualization tools for trend analysis and reporting.
-
Ability to develop technical specifications, design criteria, and procurement documentation for treatment systems, controls, and monitoring equipment; experience reviewing vendor submittals and shop drawings.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills: able to prepare concise technical reports, present findings to cross‑functional teams, and coordinate with regulators, vendors, and contractors.
-
Excellent problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
-
Commitment to safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance; awareness of laboratory and construction site safety practices and hazard mitigation.

Experience with wastewater treatment design, air pollution control technologies, soil/groundwater remediation, and contamination assessment methodologies.
-
Familiarity with environmental modeling and assessment tools, LIMS systems, and GIS is advantageous.
-
Experience supporting sustainability initiatives, greenhouse gas inventories, or lifecycle assessments beneficial for organizations pursuing broader environmental goals.
-
Training or certifications in environmental management systems (ISO 14001), hazardous waste operations (HAZWOPER), or spill response are advantageous.
Work Environment & Compensation
