Mechanical Design Engineer
Mechanical Design Engineer: join a collaborative, safety-minded team to design, analyze, and improve reliable lab and pilot-plant equipment with clear cross-functional impact.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused mechanical design engineer to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of mechanical systems for laboratory, pilot‑plant, and light industrial facilities. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, process engineering, manufacturing, facilities, and EHS teams to deliver practical, code‑compliant mechanical designs that enable safe, reliable, and maintainable equipment and systems. This role requires strong technical judgment, clear cross‑team communication, hands‑on CAD and drawing production, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
-
Conceptualize, develop, and detail mechanical components, assemblies, and support systems for laboratory and pilot‑plant equipment using 3D CAD and 2D technical drawings; create models, BOMs, and manufacturing packages suitable for procurement and fabrication.
-
Define mechanical design criteria including materials selection, load and stress requirements, tolerances, thermal and fluid considerations, and maintainability; ensure designs meet applicable codes and industry standards.
-
Perform engineering analyses such as basic FEA, kinematics, pressure vessel checks, heat transfer estimations, and fluid flow calculations to validate designs and identify failure modes.
-
Prepare and review vendor drawings, specifications, and submittals for pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, piping, valves, and rotating equipment; evaluate vendor proposals and support procurement activities.
-
Collaborate with process engineers to translate process requirements into mechanical solutions including piping & instrumentation interfaces, equipment supports, anchoring, and alignment strategies.
-
Produce clear, well‑documented engineering calculations, assembly instructions, and inspection criteria; maintain accurate revision control of drawings and technical documents.
-
Support equipment installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities in laboratory and pilot‑plant settings; work with fabrication shops, contractors, and facilities to resolve field issues.
-
Participate in design reviews, hazard analyses, and change control processes to ensure mechanical considerations are integrated into project scope and safety decisions.
-
Develop and implement mechanical testing protocols, assist with prototype evaluation, and iterate designs based on test results and manufacturing feedback.
-
Support incident investigations related to mechanical systems, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to improve reliability and safety.
-
Mentor junior designers and drafters; contribute to the development and maintenance of mechanical standards, drawing templates, and best practices to foster an inclusive, team‑oriented engineering culture.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
-
3+ years of practical experience in mechanical design for industrial, laboratory, or pilot‑plant equipment; experience with fabrication, assembly, and vendor coordination preferred.
-
Proficiency in 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo) and 2D drawing production with experience generating BOMs and manufacturing deliverables.
-
Working knowledge of mechanical analysis methods (FEA, stress analysis, thermal calculations, fluid dynamics) and comfort performing calculations and documenting assumptions.
-
Familiarity with mechanical components and systems including pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, rotating equipment, bearings, seals, and piping systems.
-
Strong technical writing and communication skills: able to prepare concise technical reports, present design intent to cross‑functional teams, and coordinate with vendors, fabricators, and contractors.
-
Attention to detail, excellent problem‑solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
-
Commitment to safety, quality, and regulatory compliance; awareness of laboratory and construction site safety practices and mechanical hazard mitigation.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
-
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field for roles with increased technical responsibility.
-
Professional certification such as PE or the ability to obtain relevant licensure within a defined timeframe is advantageous.
-
Experience with pressure vessel and piping code requirements (ASME, ANSI, B31), machine design standards, and material selection for corrosive or high‑temperature environments.
-
Familiarity with CAD data management systems (PDM/PLM), GD&T, and drawing standards; experience with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS), CFD, or similar analysis software beneficial.
-
Experience supporting prototype fabrication, shop floor practices, and vendor quality control processes; background in manufacturing methods and welding practices helpful.
-
Training or certifications related to lifting, rigging, vibration analysis, or reliability engineering are advantageous.
Work Environment & Compensation
-
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering, manufacturing, and EHS organization; work includes office‑based design, hands‑on prototyping, field support, and periodic presence in laboratory and pilot‑plant environments.
-
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
-
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
-
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
