Electrical Power Engineer
Electrical Power Engineer: join a collaborative, safety‑minded team to design, analyze, and commission power systems across labs and plants — driving reliable, code‑compliant solutions.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused electrical power engineer to support the design, analysis, and optimization of electrical power systems across laboratory, pilot‑plant, and light industrial environments. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, process engineering, manufacturing, quality, and EHS teams to ensure reliable, safe, and code‑compliant power delivery for equipment and facilities. This role requires strong analytical judgment, clear cross‑team communication, hands‑on testing and commissioning experience, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Design, analyze, and specify low‑voltage and medium‑voltage power distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, panelboards, motor control centers, distribution feeders, and grounding systems.
Perform load calculations, short‑circuit analysis, coordination studies, voltage drop analysis, and protective device selection to ensure system reliability and compliance with applicable codes (e.g., NEC, IEEE standards).
Develop single‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and installation specifications for new equipment and facility upgrades; prepare technical documentation for procurement and construction.
Support equipment commissioning, start‑up, and troubleshooting activities including on‑site testing, power quality measurements (harmonics, flicker, transients), meter verification, and energy monitoring.
Lead root cause investigations for electrical failures, collaborate on corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and implement design or process changes to mitigate recurrence.
Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and cross‑functional teams to review vendor submittals, witness factory acceptance tests, and oversee field installations to ensure adherence to specifications and safety practices.
Apply reliability and maintenance best practices to recommend preventative maintenance, condition monitoring (e.g., infrared thermography, vibration), and spare parts strategies for critical electrical assets.
Prepare concise technical reports, calculations, and project documentation that summarize scope, analysis, test results, recommendations, and costs; present findings to stakeholders and leadership.
Maintain accurate electrical drawings, change control records, and test reports with appropriate revision control and traceability to support audits and regulatory requirements.
Participate in safety and incident investigations related to electrical systems; ensure corrective actions address safety and compliance concerns and follow through to closure.
Mentor junior engineers and technicians in electrical design, testing, and safety practices; contribute to the development and maintenance of standards, checklists, and training materials.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of practical experience in electrical power system design, analysis, commissioning, or maintenance in industrial, laboratory, or manufacturing environments.
Hands‑on experience with power system studies (load flow, short‑circuit, coordination), protective device selection and coordination, and grounding system design.
Proficiency with electrical CAD and analysis tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower) and comfort applying engineering calculations to support design decisions.
Experience with commissioning and testing of electrical equipment, familiarity with power quality measurement tools, and the ability to interpret instrumentation and meter data.
Strong problem‑solving, technical writing, and communication skills: able to prepare clear technical reports, present findings to cross‑functional stakeholders, and coordinate with vendors and contractors.
Working knowledge of electrical codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, NFPA) and experience ensuring designs meet safety and regulatory requirements.
Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities, and commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, Python) and experience with asset management or maintenance systems preferred.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is advantageous.
Experience with medium‑voltage systems, switchgear, and transformer protection; familiarity with arc‑flash hazard analysis and labeling practices.
Certifications such as NFPA 70E training, IEEE‑related certifications, or commissioning/energy management credentials are beneficial.
Experience with renewable integration, energy storage systems, motor drives, or power electronics is a plus.
Familiarity with reliability concepts (FMEA, MTBF/MTTR) as applied to electrical systems and experience supporting supplier/vendor technical evaluations preferred.
Training or certifications related to root cause analysis, vibration/thermography inspection, or predictive maintenance techniques are advantageous.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering, manufacturing, and EHS organization; work includes office‑based design, field commissioning, laboratory testing, and periodic presence in pilot‑plant environments.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
