HVAC Engineer
HVAC Engineer: join a collaborative, safety-minded team to design, commission, and optimize lab and pilot-plant HVAC systems with clear impact on safety, efficiency, and compliance.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused HVAC engineer to design, commission, and support heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across laboratory, pilot‑plant, and light industrial environments. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, process engineering, facilities, manufacturing, quality, and EHS teams to ensure system performance, energy efficiency, maintainability, and compliance with applicable specifications and regulations. This role requires strong technical judgment, clear cross‑team communication, hands‑on field and controls experience, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Design HVAC systems (air handling, ventilation, heating, cooling, chilled water, refrigeration, and exhaust) for lab, pilot, and light industrial spaces, balancing performance, energy efficiency, safety, and maintainability.
Develop equipment specifications, single‑line diagrams, ductwork and piping layouts, control sequences, and equipment schedules to support procurement and installation.
Perform load calculations, ventilation assessments, psychrometric analysis, and sizing for heating/cooling equipment and distribution systems using industry tools and standards.
Lead commissioning, start‑up, and acceptance testing of HVAC and refrigeration systems; develop test plans, execute functional performance testing, document results, and resolve deficiencies.
Troubleshoot operational issues, perform root cause investigations for equipment or control failures, recommend corrective actions, and validate fixes through data analysis and field testing.
Develop and maintain control strategies and sequences of operation for BAS/EMS integration; configure, tune, and validate building automation and direct digital control (DDC) systems.
Support scale‑up and process transitions by reviewing HVAC impacts on pilot and production operations, designing temporary or permanent solutions, and coordinating with contractors and facility teams.
Prepare installation, inspection, and preventive maintenance plans; develop acceptance criteria and checklists to support reliability and asset management programs.
Collaborate with suppliers and contractors to evaluate equipment options, review technical submittals, witness vendor testing, and qualify new vendors or products.
Ensure designs and installations comply with applicable codes and standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, IMC, NEC, local codes) and internal safety and environmental requirements.
Prepare concise technical reports, test plans, and presentations that summarize scope, methods, results, recommendations, and costs; present findings to cross‑functional stakeholders and leadership.
Participate in safety and incident investigations related to HVAC systems and building services; ensure corrective actions address safety and compliance concerns and follow through to closure.
Mentor junior engineers and technicians in HVAC design, commissioning, controls, and safe work practices; contribute to the development and maintenance of standards, procedures, and training materials.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, Facilities Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of practical experience in HVAC design, commissioning, controls, or facilities engineering in laboratory, industrial, or commercial environments.
Hands‑on experience with HVAC system design and analysis (load calculations, equipment sizing, duct/piping design) and interpreting system performance data to support engineering decisions.
Proficiency with HVAC and building systems tools (e.g., AHU/CHW system design, ductulator, Revit/AutoCAD, Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP, or comparable software) and competence applying engineering calculations and data analysis.
Experience with building automation systems (DDC/BAS), control logic development, and troubleshooting of control systems and field devices (sensors, actuators, VFDs).
Experience with commissioning and functional performance testing, including development of test plans, executing tests, documenting results, and managing punch lists to closure.
Strong problem‑solving, technical writing, and communication skills: able to prepare clear technical reports, present findings to cross‑functional stakeholders, and coordinate with suppliers and contractors.
Working knowledge of HVAC codes, standards, and regulatory requirements relevant to the business (ASHRAE, NFPA, IMC, local codes) and experience ensuring designs meet safety and compliance requirements.
Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities, and commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, Python) and experience with maintenance, CMMS, or BAS software preferred.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Professional Engineer (PE) license or other relevant certifications (e.g., CEM, BEMP, LEED, Commissioning Authority) is advantageous.
Experience with laboratory ventilation, cleanrooms, fume hoods, and hazardous exhaust systems preferred.
Familiarity with energy efficiency strategies, heat recovery, chilled water plant optimization, and demand control ventilation is a plus.
Experience with refrigeration systems, cold rooms, and cryogenic equipment is beneficial for certain facilities applications.
Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), and reliability concepts (FMEA, MTBF/MTTR) as applied to building systems and maintenance planning is desirable.
Certifications or training in commissioning, controls programming, or HVAC diagnostics are beneficial.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering, facilities, and EHS organization; work includes office‑based design and analysis, field commissioning and troubleshooting, and periodic presence in manufacturing and laboratory areas.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
