Construction Engineer
Construction Engineer: join a collaborative, safety‑minded team to plan, supervise, and deliver lab and plant builds on time, on budget, and to code — with a focus on quality.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused construction engineer to plan, manage, and support building, renovation, and infrastructure projects across laboratory, pilot‑plant, and light industrial facilities. The successful candidate will work closely with project stakeholders including R&D, process engineering, facilities, EHS, contractors, and vendors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable codes and specifications. This role requires strong technical judgment, effective cross‑team communication, hands‑on field experience, and a commitment to quality, constructability, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Manage construction projects from concept through turnover, including scope definition, schedule development, cost estimating, bid management, contract administration, and closeout activities.
Prepare and review construction documents, drawings, and specifications; develop scopes of work, technical requirements, and procurement packages to support contractor selection and purchasing.
Develop and maintain project schedules, progress tracking, and milestone reporting; coordinate trade activities, long‑lead items, and site logistics to support on‑time execution.
Coordinate and lead construction meetings, pre‑construction reviews, and site inspections; document meeting minutes, action items, and follow‑up to closure.
Provide on‑site supervision and technical direction during construction, commissioning, and start‑up; review contractor work for compliance with drawings, specifications, and safety requirements.
Perform constructability reviews and value engineering to optimize schedule, cost, and maintainability while preserving functional and safety requirements.
Develop and enforce site safety plans, permit requirements, and contractor safety controls; participate in safety observations, incident investigations, and corrective action development.
Manage change orders, field modifications, and nonconformance reports; assess impacts to cost, schedule, and risk and coordinate approvals with stakeholders.
Coordinate utility connections, site civil work, structural modifications, architectural finishes, and MEP installations to ensure integrated systems performance and code compliance.
Support commissioning and acceptance testing activities by developing test plans, witnessing functional tests, documenting deficiencies, and verifying corrective actions.
Prepare and maintain project documentation including RFIs, submittals, AS‑built drawings, turnover packages, O&M manuals, and warranties to support reliability and maintenance programs.
Collaborate with suppliers and contractors to evaluate technical proposals, review submittals, witness factory or site testing, and qualify vendors or products for project use.
Prepare concise technical reports, cost summaries, and presentations that summarize project status, risks, recommendations, and forecasts; present findings to cross‑functional stakeholders and leadership.
Mentor junior engineers, coordinators, and field technicians in construction management, quality assurance, safe work practices, and documentation; contribute to development of standards, procedures, and training materials.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical/Construction discipline, or a closely related field, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of practical experience in construction management, project engineering, or field engineering within laboratory, industrial, or commercial construction environments.
Experience preparing and reviewing construction drawings, specifications, submittals, and contractor deliverables; ability to interpret engineering designs and translate them into executable field work.
Proven ability to develop and manage project schedules, cost estimates, progress reporting, and change management in fast‑paced project environments.
Hands‑on field experience with construction oversight, quality inspections, safety compliance, and coordination of multi‑trade teams and subcontractors.
Familiarity with construction contracting practices, procurement, bid evaluation, and contract administration; experience managing subcontractor performance and resolving disputes.
Strong problem‑solving, technical writing, and communication skills: able to prepare clear technical reports, present project status to stakeholders, and coordinate with suppliers and contractors.
Working knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and permitting requirements (IBC, ADA, NFPA, local building and fire codes) and experience ensuring work meets safety and regulatory requirements.
Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, and commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Proficiency with project controls and documentation tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6, Procore, Aconex, SharePoint) and competency with Excel for data analysis and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), PMP, or similar certifications are advantageous.
Experience with lab and cleanroom construction, hazardous area installations, and specialized utilities (compressed gases, process piping, corrosives) preferred.
Familiarity with BIM workflows and tools (Revit, Navisworks) for coordination, clash detection, and as‑built documentation is a plus.
Experience with sustainable construction practices, commissioning, and handover processes to support energy efficiency and operational readiness.
Knowledge of reliability concepts (FMEA, asset lifecycle planning) and maintenance planning to support constructability and long‑term facility operations.
Training or certifications in construction safety (OSHA 30, OSHA 10, CCP) and quality management are beneficial.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering, facilities, and EHS organization; work includes office‑based planning and coordination, frequent field presence for construction supervision, and periodic access to manufacturing and laboratory areas.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
