Control Systems Engineer
Join a collaborative, safety-minded team to design, program, and validate control systems for lab to light industrial use — hands-on impact, reliable automation, and clear growth.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused Control Systems Engineer to design, develop, and deploy control architectures and automation solutions for laboratory, pilot‑scale, and light industrial applications. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, process engineering, robotics, manufacturing, and suppliers to deliver reliable, maintainable, and compliant control systems that improve safety, throughput, and data quality. This role requires strong systems thinking, hands‑on commissioning experience, excellent communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Design, specify, and implement control system architectures including PLCs, DCS, PACs, I/O, motor drives, HMIs, and industrial networks to meet functional and performance requirements.
Develop and document control strategies, sequence diagrams, control narratives, and interface requirements; produce schematics, I/O lists, bill of materials, and procurement specifications to support fabrication and installation.
Program, configure, and commission PLCs, motion controllers, safety controllers, and operator interfaces using industry‑standard platforms and structured coding practices.
Design and implement industrial communication networks and fieldbus topologies (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, ProfiBus, OPC UA), ensuring robust data integrity, determinism, and cybersecurity considerations.
Integrate control systems with robots, vision systems, sensors, analyzers, and laboratory instruments; define and validate control and data exchange interfaces for closed‑loop operation.
Develop test plans, FAT/SAT procedures, and validation protocols; lead system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and iterative refinement to achieve acceptance criteria.
Implement functional safety measures and safety‑related control logic (e.g., safety PLCs, STO/SBC, interlocks, E‑stops); perform risk assessments and support safety reviews and certifications.
Support installation, commissioning, and start‑up activities on site; perform root cause analysis of failures, implement corrective actions, and drive resolution with cross‑functional teams and vendors.
Develop and maintain technical documentation including wiring diagrams, network diagrams, PLC/HMI code comments, test reports, SOPs, maintenance guides, and as‑built records to support operations and maintenance.
Engage with suppliers and system integrators to evaluate control hardware and software, review shop drawings, witness factory acceptance tests, and qualify vendors and products for production use.
Provide training and technical support to operators, technicians, and maintenance staff; develop troubleshooting aids, control logic change procedures, and preventive maintenance plans to maximize uptime.
Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying automation and control optimization opportunities, improving control stability and cycle times, and applying lessons learned across projects.
Present technical analyses, risk assessments, and project status updates to cross‑functional teams and leadership; prepare clear reports and recommendations to support decision making.
Mentor junior engineers and technicians on controls best practices, safe integration techniques, and documentation standards; contribute to departmental standards and training materials.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of hands‑on experience designing, programming, and commissioning industrial control systems in laboratory, pilot, or light industrial environments.
Proven experience with PLC platforms (e.g., Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, Schneider) and PLC programming languages (Ladder, Structured Text, Function Block); familiarity with safety PLCs is preferred.
Strong knowledge of motion control, drives, encoders, and closed‑loop control strategies; experience with coordinated motion and servo systems is advantageous.
Experience designing and troubleshooting industrial networks and fieldbuses (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, OPC UA) and understanding of determinism and latency impacts on control performance.
Experience integrating sensors, vision systems, analyzers, and instrumentation into control systems; ability to design reliable sensing and feedback strategies for process control.
Demonstrated troubleshooting skills across electrical, network, and software domains; ability to diagnose failures, implement corrective actions, and document root cause analyses.
Familiarity with applicable safety standards and practices (e.g., IEC 61508/62304 concepts, ISO 12100, ISO 13849, ANSI/RIA) and experience implementing machine safeguarding and safety control systems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills: able to prepare clear technical documentation, present status updates, and collaborate with suppliers and cross‑functional stakeholders.
Proficiency with control system development tools (PLC IDEs, HMI/SCADA platforms, MATLAB/Simulink) and competency with version control, ticketing, and documentation systems.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Master’s degree in Control Systems, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline or equivalent specialized experience.
Experience with process control strategies (PID tuning, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control) and process analytical tools.
Familiarity with real‑time systems, embedded controllers, industrial cybersecurity practices, and scripting languages (Python, C/C++) for automation tasks and integration.
Experience with laboratory automation, sample handling systems, or high‑throughput instrumentation preferred.
Knowledge of reliability and maintainability practices (FMEA, MTBF, predictive maintenance) to support operational readiness and uptime.
Certifications in PLCs, functional safety, industrial networking, or relevant professional credentials are advantageous.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering, automation, and operations organization; role combines office‑based design work with frequent hands‑on commissioning, lab testing, and periodic access to pilot and manufacturing areas.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
