Marine Engineer
Join a collaborative, safety-minded team as a Marine Engineer — design, maintain, and optimize ship systems with real impact across fleet operations and regulatory compliance.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused marine engineer to support vessel design, maintenance, and operational reliability across our fleet and shore‑based facilities. The successful candidate will partner with operations, technical, regulatory, procurement, and third‑party service providers to design, maintain, and optimize marine systems and equipment that deliver safe, efficient, and compliant vessel operations. This role requires strong systems thinking, hands‑on mechanical and marine engineering experience, excellent communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement and seaworthy operations.
Key Responsibilities
Inspect, design, evaluate, and optimize shipboard and offshore systems including propulsion, auxiliary machinery, HVAC, fuel systems, steering gear, fire‑fighting systems, and ballast systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Develop, implement, and support preventive and corrective maintenance strategies, maintenance plans, and refit/retrofit activities to ensure regulatory compliance and operational readiness.
Collaborate with vessel masters, technical operations, procurement, and vendors to define equipment performance requirements, specification, and acceptance criteria that support safety, reliability, and maintainability.
Lead or participate in risk assessments, root cause investigations, and failure mode analyses (e.g., FMEA) and implement engineering controls, mitigations, and procedural changes to reduce operational risk.
Prepare and maintain technical documentation including drawings, system schematics, maintenance procedures, inspection reports, and equipment manuals; ensure documentation is current and accessible.
Plan and oversee trials, sea‑acceptance tests, commissioning, and performance verification activities for repaired or newly installed equipment; analyze results and provide recommendations.
Support procurement by specifying technical requirements, evaluating vendor proposals, and coordinating equipment selection, inspection, and installation activities with shore and shipboard teams.
Provide technical support for onboard troubleshooting, casualty response, and emergency repairs; lead or support root cause investigations and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
Implement and monitor condition‑based maintenance practices, vibration analysis, oil analysis, and other reliability tools to improve uptime and reduce lifecycle costs.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, reliability centered maintenance) to improve operational efficiency, reduce downtime, and lower total cost of ownership while maintaining safety and compliance.
Coordinate with classification societies, flag state authorities, and other regulatory bodies to ensure statutory compliance and support surveys, audits, and inspections.
Train and mentor shipboard engineers, technicians, and junior shore staff on safe operating procedures, maintenance best practices, and equipment fundamentals.
Support environmental and safety programs by providing technical input for emissions control, ballast water management, waste handling, and safety management system (SMS) activities.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of progressive marine or mechanical engineering experience supporting vessel operations, equipment maintenance, or shipyard projects.
Practical experience with shipboard systems and equipment (engines, gearboxes, generators, pumps, heat exchangers, fuel & lubrication systems) and familiarity with marine standards and classification society requirements.
Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting, equipment failure analysis, and implementing corrective actions using structured problem‑solving methods.
Working knowledge of ship stability, trim, and ballast operations, as well as marine safety and statutory requirements (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM) applicable to vessel operations.
Strong analytical skills with experience using diagnostic tools (vibration, thermography, oil analysis), condition monitoring software, and basic engineering calculations for mass/energy balances and performance evaluation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills: able to prepare clear technical reports, present findings to cross‑functional teams, and support operational decision making.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, operational environment, collaborate across disciplines, and maintain attention to detail while delivering results.
Proficiency with engineering tools (CAD, piping/isometrics, technical drawings), maintenance management systems (CMMS), and common office/productivity software.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Professional certifications or licensure (e.g., PE, CEng, Class‑approved endorsements) or relevant maritime certifications preferred.
Experience with shipyard work, commissioning, drydock planning, and coordination of repair projects and refits.
Familiarity with automation, PLC/DCS marine control systems, alarm management, and integration of monitoring systems preferred.
Experience with regulatory interactions, survey preparation, and working with classification societies and flag administrations.
Training or certifications in marine safety, firefighting, or STCW elements advantageous.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary operations and technical organization; role combines office‑based engineering work with regular shipboard visits, shipyard oversight, and hands‑on commissioning or repair activities.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
