Geotechnical Engineer
Join a collaborative, safety‑minded team as a Geotechnical Engineer to deliver practical subsurface solutions across infrastructure and coastal projects — clear impact, growth, and value.
We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused geotechnical engineer to support subsurface investigation, foundation design, slope stability, and ground improvement across infrastructure, coastal, and industrial projects. The successful candidate will partner with project managers, structural and civil engineers, environmental specialists, contractors, and clients to develop practicable, cost‑effective geotechnical solutions that meet performance, schedule, and regulatory requirements. This role requires strong geotechnical engineering fundamentals, field and laboratory experience, excellent communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement and risk‑aware project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and execute geotechnical site investigations including borehole and CPT programs, test pits, in‑situ testing, and sampling to characterize subsurface conditions and groundwater regimes.
Perform soil and rock characterization, interpret laboratory and field test data (e.g., grain size, Atterberg limits, shear strength, consolidation, permeability) and synthesize findings into geotechnical models and reports.
Develop foundation recommendations for shallow and deep foundations (spread footings, driven/continuous/auger piles, drilled shafts, mat foundations) including bearing capacity, settlement analysis, and constructability considerations.
Assess and design slope stability, earth retention systems, and temporary shoring using limit equilibrium and numerical methods; recommend remediation or stabilization measures as necessary.
Design ground improvement solutions (e.g., stone columns, vibro‑compaction, soil mixing, grouting, lightweight fills) and prepare execution specifications and construction quality control/assurance plans.
Prepare clear, concise geotechnical engineering reports, foundation design memoranda, borehole logs, laboratory data summaries, and construction drawings/details to support permitting, procurement, and construction.
Support procurement and construction by specifying geotechnical requirements, reviewing contractor submittals, attending preconstruction meetings, and providing technical oversight during installation and testing.
Lead or contribute to ground risk assessments, constructability reviews, and value‑engineering efforts to manage subsurface uncertainty and optimize project costs and schedules.
Perform engineering analyses using appropriate methods and software (e.g., PLAXIS, GEO5, LPILE, SLOPE/W, finite element/limit equilibrium tools) and validate results with engineering judgment and sensitivity studies.
Coordinate with environmental, structural, and coastal engineers to integrate geotechnical parameters into design and environmental permitting, including slope, erosion, and groundwater management considerations.
Provide technical support during construction for field decisions, unexpected subsurface conditions, and claims/changes; document observations and recommended corrective actions.
Maintain and enforce health, safety, and environmental practices on site visits and investigations; ensure field teams follow safe sampling, drilling, and access procedures.
Mentor junior engineers and technicians, review field and laboratory data, and support professional development and knowledge sharing across the geotechnical team.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience including field site investigation, laboratory testing, and foundation or slope design for infrastructure or industrial projects.
Practical experience with subsurface investigation techniques (drilling, CPT, sampling), borehole logging, and overseeing field crews and third‑party drilling vendors.
Proficiency in geotechnical analysis and design methods for bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, lateral earth pressures, and shallow/deep foundation systems.
Experience interpreting and specifying laboratory testing (e.g., triaxial, consolidation, direct shear, permeability) and using test results to inform design decisions.
Strong analytical skills and experience with geotechnical software and spreadsheets for calculations, modeling, and sensitivity analysis.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills: able to prepare clear technical reports, present findings to project teams and clients, and support project decision making.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, project‑driven environment; collaborate across disciplines; and maintain attention to detail while delivering results on schedule.
Proficiency with common office/productivity software and familiarity with CAD/GIS for plan preparation and site mapping.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
Professional licensure (e.g., PE, P.Eng.) or progress toward licensure preferred.
Experience with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring (inclinometers, piezometers, settlement plates) and interpretation of monitoring data during construction and post‑construction.
Familiarity with geotechnical site investigation safety, traffic control, and access planning, including coastal/marine investigation methods where applicable.
Experience working with contractors, testing laboratories, and regulatory agencies; familiarity with permitting and consenting processes advantageous.
Training or certifications in soil‑related testing procedures, construction QA/QC, or specialty ground improvement methods are a plus.
Work Environment & Compensation
Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering and project delivery organization; role combines office‑based engineering work with frequent field investigations, construction oversight, and laboratory coordination.
Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
